A part of the Greater Austin Metropolitan area and in Williamson County is the city of Round Rock. Known for its unique name, this area is characterized for its black, fertile soil in the Blackland Prairie. This historic city dates back to having human habitation since 9200 BC, with its earliest known occupants being the Native American tribe of Tonkawa. Since then, Round Rock has grown tremendously with its largest commercial and business center being La Frontera. The city is also home to Texas A&M’s Health Science Center, and the Texas State University Round Rock Campus. You’ll also find Dell corporate headquarters here, which develops, sells, and supports computer products. Although in the 1990s Round Rock was a bedroom community, primarily consisting of families commuting to Austin for work and returning home in the evening, the area has certainly grown since then.
